I wanted to update this review. After a few weeks, one of the fans broke. After replacing this with a superior product, I took it apart and removed the USB hub. Below is the original review.
I use a 17″ widescreen gaming notebook and the graphics processor (GeForce 8600GT) tends to run a little hot in comparison to its desktop counterpart. I experimented with placing an object under the rear of the laptop to keep it cooler, and that had some success. I bought this fan device to improve upon that success.
In essence, this device does not. The USB hub appears to be 2.0, and the device’s size is adequate to support my laptop stably. Note that you couldn’t use an external hard drive off this hub due to power insufficiency. Low power devices (such as flash drives) and self-powered devices (such as printers) would be necessary.
Using Speedfan.exe, I do not notice a change in operating temperature. The fan device does cool the laptop more quickly following intense applications such as gaming, but the temperature is unaffected during gameplay.
The fan device came with three fans (there are six holes, however) that blew air at the laptop. I opened the device and flipped the fans to face the other direction (in the original orientation, I got even higher temperatures during operation, so it was just blowing the hot air back at the computer as it escaped). On the plus side, it is possible to move the fans to any of the six slots for your specific hardware configuration.
In summary, I would not buy this again but would instead opt for the highly-rated Antec cooler also sold on Amazon.com.

If you need one, this one has 3 fans but I wish it didn’t make as much noise as it does. If you are in a very quiet place, it is somewhat annoying. If you are working with the radio or TV on, you won’t notice it as much. If I needed one for my other notebook (my Think Pad runs MUCH cooler than my HP) I would buy another one of these.
